Who turns the S60 device off for the night?
Yesterday I spent some time investigating the results of our Smartphone360 study. One of its findings made me rethink of my habits of using my Nokia 6630. During the study, about one third of the panelists never turned their device off for the night! Only a very small share of them turned the device off regularly. I turn my phone off every evening. I know I could put it in the silent mode, and that the alarm clock works even then. But I still turn the phone off for every night.
We had a small opinion poll about the topic during the lunch break. I was the only one not having my phone on at night. Changing the habit may be tough. I got my first mobile in 1990, and I learnt to power off it for the night as the battery, even full, simply did not last more than 8 hours. Perhaps it’s time for me to learn something new after 15 years. But so far I have never forgotten the PIN code for my phone.

Personallly, I never turn my phone off. I actually use it as alarm clock. I don’t even own a ‘real’ alarm clock.
The only problem I have with this is alarms from birthdays, synched with outlook. These always cause alarms at midnight.
Does anyone have good tips for this?
I used to turn off my phone two years back and I was using a Nokia 3650. But after some time, this habit just went away, of course when I tried.
i never turned off any phone at night. to me a mobile is something to be always reachable. no matter at what time. of course that sometimes i woke up with some drunk friends saying stupid things, but that only happened in a very few nights…
Similar to the annoyance of mid-night reminder of the birthday, S60 phone also reminded me a few times from to-do list. Why cannot it remind me at 9 in the morning instead? Someone should do something about this!
A cellphone should always be reachable. So it should be turned on always. However, as S60 phones may behave clumsy when you install and uninstall softwares, it’s advisable to reboot the device before and after installing any software.
I leave my phone on, put my phone into silent mode & then plug it in to the the charger.
I told my colleague who works with the calendar application about the annoyances Niels and Jim mention above. I did not manage to get any great tip to avoid the problem, but the team is fully aware of it. A positive sign is that at least in a couple of test cases done with the new S60 prototypes, the alarm time set for anniversary (e.g. 8:00 am) did not any more change to midnight when synchronizing the calendar. Well, this does not guarantee all the challenges are solved but at least people are working on them. Thanks for the feedback!
The way I got around these issues on the 3650, was by installing a 3rd party app, Extended Profiles I believe.
that allowed me to schedule profiles. I had the phone go into silent mode at 23:55 and back to normal at 5:30 or so.. not ideal, but at least I could sleep : )
I have been using the 6630 since this summer, but now I think about it, the most annoying thing on the 3650 was not the fact that the alarms went of, but how.. the calendar / clock alarm tone on the 3650 would wake up an entire city block : )
Don’t feel bad Esa… I turn my phone off at night!! I think if I’m sleeping my phone should be resting as well, and in the morning my phone wakes up to wake me up
Its great that in Series 60 phones alarm works perfectly well even the handset is switched off.
Just set the alarm timing > Turn off the handset > Alarm will start ringing at the specified time > Option to snooze or turn the alarm off > Option to switch off the handset.
WOW.. thats really coool and handy.
teststs
Seems to work
I’m always switching off my E51 at night… the alarm works anyway and asks me to switch on the phone again.
Battery life is longer and I personally don’t wanna be reached at night… what are mailboxes for otherwise?
